1. Anti-Oxidation and Surface Passivation Protection

Aluminum powder is chemically reactive and readily oxidizes upon exposure to air, forming an aluminum oxide layer that diminishes metallic luster and compromises overall coating performance. Stearic acid forms a hydrophobic organic film on the surface of aluminum particles, effectively isolating them from air and moisture. In powder coatings or high-solid systems, stearic acid acts as an internal lubricant to significantly improve application smoothness, reduce friction during spraying, and enhance coating efficiency and surface uniformity.

In the formulation of high-quality silver-flake paints, stearic acid and its derivatives (e.g., stearates) are standard components used to enhance overall coating performance. However, their addition must be strictly controlled; excessive amounts can lead to reduced paint film adhesion, poor intercoat adhesion, and surface defects such as cratering.
