Stearic Acid Unlocks the Stability Code of Wax Emulsions

In the precise formulation of wax emulsions, stearic acid may not be the primary ingredient, but it significantly influences stability, film formation, and application performance. During wax emulsion preparation, stearic acid plays three key roles:

First, enhance emulsification efficiency. Waxes are inherently hydrophobic with high melting points, making uniform dispersion difficult with surfactants alone. Stearic acid forms a composite interfacial film with emulsifiers (e.g., nonionic OP series or anionic SDBS), reducing oil-water interfacial tension. This significantly shortens homogenization time and improves the uniformity of wax particle dispersion.

Second, enhance storage stability. Adding 0.5%–2.0% (w/w) stearic acid increases the absolute Zeta potential of the emulsion by 15%–30%, effectively inhibiting wax particle aggregation and sedimentation. Accelerated testing at high temperature (45°C) shows that the stearic acid-containing wax emulsion remains stable for 6 months with no phase separation or wax exudation, whereas the control group exhibits significant flocculation within 3 weeks.

Third, optimize film formation and hand feel. The dense wax network formed by stearic acid enhances the wear resistance and water repellency of the wax film, ensuring that in applications on leather, paper, wood, and other substrates, the wax emulsion remains smooth and non-tacky while preventing "blooming."

Note: Stearic acid dosage must be precisely controlled. Excess amounts can cause abnormally high emulsion viscosity or cold precipitation. We recommend slowly adding it in a molten state at 75–85°C while applying high-speed shear (≥8000 rpm) to ensure thorough blending.
